Title:

Animal Adaptations

X

Timing:

5 weeks

X

Driving Question:

What would a human need to do to prepare and plan for travel to an extreme environment?

X

Project Description:

First grade students will complete this project in a science unit. They will learn about the various ways animals adapt to their environments (locomotion, protection, camouflage, food). Through various hands-on activities and research, students will find information on animal adaptations. They will then create a non-fiction research book about an animal. Applying their knowledge of animal adaptations, they will plan and prepare a “traveler” to survive in an extreme environment.

Final Product(s):

Non-fiction animal environment and adaptation book and 1st grade travelers project.

Essential Standards:

  • I can identify the differences/similarities between plants/animals and their features.
  • I can compare the differences/similarities between plants/animals and their features.
  • I can explain the ways animals/plants adapt to their environments.
  • I can use materials to design a way to help humans adapt to different environments

Potential Community Outreach:

  • Zoo field trip to the Kansas City Zoo
  • Kansas City Zoo Zoomobile visits our school and does a “Fur & Feathers” animal adaptations lesson with students

Teacher Reflection:

  • Provide a lot of variety in crafting supplies for the final project so students can be creative and use different materials that work for their ideas
  • For the final project group students into small groups that will be productive (about 3 students is best)
  • For the non-fiction research book it is a good idea to use animals that you find within the environments (rainforest, arctic, African savanna, desert) so that you can connect it to the traveler easily
  • Students can present projects in various ways; in person or on a recorded video
