Title:
Outsiders- Mock Trial
Timing:
Unit-8 Weeks
Driving Question:
How can I gather evidence to prove my claim? What should Johnny Cade be charged with?
Project Description:
After reading The Outsiders, students will work in teams to put one of the main characters, Johnny Cade, on trail for an incident that happened in the book. Students will take on the persona of layers, witnesses, jury, etc., to prove their claims through evidence from the book.
Final Product(s):
Mock Trial
Essential Standards:
Citing text evidence, analyzing evidence, argumentative writing, multiple perspectives
Potential Community Outreach:
We reached out to a local judge in our community to come and speak with the students about how to collect evidence and build a convincing argument. He gave real life examples of different cases he has tried, as both a lawyer and judge, and also provided the students different argumentative techniques to apply in their trials. You could also reach out to local attorneys, as well.
Teacher Reflection:
This project forces the students to take ownership of their learning, using problem solving skills and collaborating with their peers.. As teachers, we provide them with a couple of resources to get them started. From that point, the students are encouraged to find additional resources to help them understand the trial process. We support them when necessary, but the bulk of the project is student led. They work in their teams to build strong arguments, find evidence, and build their case. Students are given about a week to prepare, and three day to practice. We bring in other classes to sit as the jury for each mock trial.
Overall, by being "hands off" the students are forced to rise to the occasion. When the trial is over, they feel accomplished and truly understand "The Outsiders" on a deeper level.
