Title:
Historical Injustice: A Story, A Life, A Triumph
Timing:
8 Weeks
Driving Question:
How does understanding historical injustice help address the social unrest of today? How do people triumph in difficult situations?
Project Description:
8th Grade Advanced ELA will be studying the topic of historical injustice. This unit will eventually lead into discussion of modern day injustices, which will help them create a topic for their argumentative research papers.
First, the students will begin by doing a mini research paper over an event in history that was considered historical injustice. Then, students will be reading their choice of a historical fiction novel. Students will break up their novel into 3-4 sections. Once a week students participate in a Socratic Seminar and reflection on the novels so far. Students will also read several historical fiction picture books and non-fiction articles about real people who have triumphed in difficult situations, and discuss and reflect over those.
Final Product(s):
Podcast that addressed the Driving Questions: Pulling in the character from their novels, as well as other people they know, or know of. Students will also have the opportunity to enter the NPR Podcast Challenge.
Essential Standards:
8.RI.1.A: Draw conclusions, infer and analyze by citing the textual evidence that most strongly supports an analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
8.SL.2.A Speak audibly and to the point, using the conventions of language as appropriate to task, purpose, and audience when presenting including appropriate volume, clear articulation, and accurate pronunciation at an understandable pace
8.SL.2.C Plan and deliver appropriate presentations based on the task, audience, and purpose integrating multimedia into presentations to clarify information, strengthen claims and evidence, and add interest.
Potential Community Outreach:
Bring in a local podcaster to talk to students about the technical part of creating a podcast, creating content, and other “behind the scenes” information about podcasting.
