Title:

Conflict and the Civil War

X

Timing:

Two/Three Weeks depending on how much time you spend on it per day. *See teacher recommendations*

X

Driving Question:

What makes conflict justified?

X

Project Description:

Students begin learning about the idea of conflict through the Civil War content. All Civil War content is covered first. Students then explore/discuss several other conflicts from history and then move into conflicts of today. After the Civil War piece is done, students brainstorm conflicts in America today and then choose a topic they feel passionate about to write their opinion piece. We had already taught opinion writing before this, so they did the majority of this writing independently with support (therefore there are no specific opinion writing plans in this).

Final Product(s):

  • Opinion Writing Piece
  • Art with a Message
  • Letter to an Organization

Essential Standards:

  • (R3Bg) use reasoning to determine the logic of an author’s conclusion and provide evidence to support reasoning

  • (W2Ab) state an opinion or establish a position and provide relevant reasons for the opinion supported by multiple facts and details

  • (H3aG) Identify political, economic and social causes and consequences of the Civil War and Reconstruction.

  • (R3cD) Analyze multiple accounts of the same event or topic, noting similarities and differences in the point of view
  • (R1Bf) Using a dictionary, a glossary, or a thesaurus (printed or electronic) to determine pronunciations, parts of speech, meanings, and alternate word choices

  • (W1C) I can strengthen my writing through revision, focusing on good traits of writing. (ie: sequencing, main idea, sentence structure, etc.)
  • (W1C)I can strengthen my writing through editing for language conventions. (i.e. grammar, usage, language mechanics, spelling).
  • (W1D) I can use technology, including the Internet, to produce my writing.
  • (W1D) I can use technology, including the Internet, to publish my writing.

Potential Community Outreach:

Written letters to an organization related to their opinion writing piece

Teacher Reflection:

Budget more time than you think you will need, I ran into snow days which pushed us back quite a bit.
