Driving Question:

How can we as historians explain how the Lewis & Clark expedition is an important part of our state’s and nation’s history?

X

Project Description:

Students will study the purchase of Louisiana Purchase and Lewis and Clark expedition. They will explain the importance through the lens of a historical figure. Students will also create current and historical maps of the Louisiana Territory.

Final Product(s):

  • Groups of 3-4 will create an map overlay with a current and historical map showing the land of Louisiana Purchase and the expedition of Lewis and Clark. This group project will be more sequential than others. Together, they will curate a bank of maps as resources and decide collectively which components they will include. Then more individualized jobs will occur, including building map keys, outline both maps, color, etc.
  • Diary entry: Students will choose a historical figure and write an entry as if they traveled through the Louisiana Purchase. Entries will include specific examples that highlight the importance of the Louisiana Purchase and the expedition of Lewis and Clark.

Essential Standards:

  • Describe the importance of the Louisiana Purchase and the expedition of Lewis and Clark.
  • With guidance and support, use visual tools and informational texts to interpret, draw conclusions, make predictions, and communicate information and ideas
  • Read and construct historical and current maps.

Potential Community Outreach:

  • Display final projects at the Anita B. Gorman Discovery Center (and visit them on a field trip)
  • Share with parents as a “trial” before/after holiday party or an evening school event
