Project Description:

Students read Touching Spirit Bear whose theme are adolescence, responsibility, forgiveness, and healing. They write a character profile, conduct eyewitness interviews as a part of a newspaper report. They will reflect on the themes and build their own personal totems.

Final Product(s):

Individual: Character Analysis Essay

Group: Class Totem

Essential Standards:

(ELA) theme in literature (RL.9-10.3 Analyze how complex characters (e.g., those with multiple or conflicting motivations)

develop over the course of a text, interact with other characters, and advance the plot or develop the theme), RL.9-10.1 Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from SE.1.C.9-12: help the individual student become a contributing member of a globally diverse community.
