X

Timing:

2 1/2 to 3 1/2 Weeks

X

X

Project Description:

Several classrooms are participating: Each classroom will be displaying a final project unique to their students and classroom including creating Recycling Bins, Sculpture, Posters, other student initiated ideas.

Final Product(s):

Individual:

*Sculptures with recycled materials

*Posters *Recycle bins

*Planting (greenhouse) *Outdoor classroom and shelving

Team: Public Product Gallery demonstrating the 4 R’s

One classroom will run a booth selling student made recycled items to earn money toward the Trike-A-Thon

Essential Standards:

*Classification (COG 2) sort by type, sort by recycle #

*Responsible conduct as a group member “do” the 4 Rs *Communication and Use of Language (HSS 5)

*Fine Motor Manipulative Skills (HLTH 4) constructing marble run *Emergent Writing (LLD 10)

*Solving problems involving earth and space (MELS III.3) *Ecology (HSS 3)

*Representing observations about earth and space (MELS III.4)

Potential Community Outreach:

● Viewing of products during ECC community event “Trike-A-Thon”

● Booth at “Trike-A-Thon” selling upcycled art

● Video recording of children demonstrating how they designed their reused items (They created marble runs) and how they operated. Share with parents/families who could then share with friends and other family members.

● Bins were created that are still being used for recycling in our school.

● Outdoor shelving materials were donated, and the shelf created is still being used in the outdoor classroom.

Teacher Reflection:

It was very well received. Parents were very interested in what the kids learned and created; we had great attendance since this project was combined with another school-wide event.

More space for presentation (set up and viewing) would be helpful and the booth with items for sale sold out before the event was over. Orders were taken to create more after the event. The kids revision process was very successful. They were very kind and thoughtful about their critiques and used advanced thinking processes. More time would have been helpful for the revision process. Some classes utilized more “voice and choice” in coming up with their end products than other classrooms; we could work on improving this aspect of the project. The entry event was well received. The students were curious about trash spread out on the floor and what to do with it.
