How can we, as lawyers, defend the rights of others?

Project Description:

Students will take the role of lawyer in order to argue for or against a court case pertaining to rights from the Bill of Rights and Constitution. The challenge for the students will be to find evidence from the Constitution to support their argument and to convince the audience that their position is correct. The purpose of the entire project is to increase understanding of the principles and rights U.S. citizens have because of the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

Final Product(s):

Opening statement (opinion piece), mock trial

Essential Standards:

  • 4.PC.1.B.b - Explain the major purpose of the Constitution.
  • 4.PC.1.C.a - Explain the major purpose of the Bill of Rights.
  • 4.PC.1.B.a - Explain the weaknesses inherent in the Articles of Confederation that led to the Constitution.
  • RI 4.2 - Determine the main idea of a text and explain how it is supported by key details; summarize the text.
  • RI 4.9 - Integrate information from two texts on the same topic in order to write or speak about the subject knowledgeably.
  • 4.W.1 - Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information.
  • 4.SL.4 - Report on a topic or text using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas or themes; speak clearly at an understandable pace.
  • 4.SL.6 - Differentiate between contexts that call for formal English (e.g., presenting ideas) and situations where informal discourse is appropriate (e.g., small-group discussion); use formal English when appropriate to task and situation.

Potential Community Outreach:

Attorney to give example opening statement, explain the purpose of an opening statement

  • Students will meet with other 4th grade students to critique/revise 1st round of opening statements
  • Incorporate high school civics students to help review/revise 2nd round of opening statements
  • Attorney back in to listen to finalized opening statement in defense of student case
