Project Description:

Students interview members of their Shark Pod (grades K-5) and research their shark pod mascot to create an original song.

Final Product(s):

A recording of each group’s song on FlipGrid.

Essential Standards:

AP 2.A: Develop criteria to distinguish between non-quality and quality performance through listening and self-assessments

PP 2.D: echo short rhythmic and melodic patterns

AP 2.B: Use music terms to describe their personal response to musical examples (function/style)

PP 4.A: Create a rhythmic and/or melodic ostinati and soundscapes

Potential Community Outreach:

Songs shared with grades K-4 for them to vote on their song they want to represent them.

Teacher Reflection:

When I used "This Land is Your Land" as an option for students to add lyrics to, I needed to modify the melody so it did not include ties over the bar line. Students struggled to see how the tie made one sound and not two, so their lyrics were not matching the melody.

2019-2020: I modified this project for 5th graders to write a song about the learner dispositions at Manor Hill. The structure of the PBL is the same, but the specific content has modified.
